  1. Di manakah terletaknya Pusat Pengajian Ilmu Pendidikan ?

PPIP terletak bertentangan dengan Pusat Pengajian Pengurusan ataupun terletak di bangunan Dewan KUliah Z.

  1. Bagaimanakah saya boleh tiba di Pejabat PPIP ?

Sekiranya anda mengambil Bas AC, anda boleh memilih untuk turun di perhentian depan Restoran Subaidah. Selepas itu jalan lurus dan menyeberangi Jalan Ilmu sehingga anda menemui Dewan Kuliah Z yang akan terletak di sebelah kanan anda. Masuk bangunan tersebut dan jalan mengikut papan tanda, anda akan tiba di Pejabat PPIP.

Sekiranya anda mengambil Bas D, C, dan B, anda boleh memilih untuk turun di perhentian Perpustakaan E48. Selepas itu, pergi ke seberang dan naik tangga untuk tiba di Pejabat PPIP yang terletak di sebelah kanan anda.

  1. Terdapat berapa cabang pengajian dalam PPIP?

Terdapat 4 cabang pengajian dalam PPIP, iaitu Sastera dengan Pendidikan ( SasPen ), Sains dengan Pendidikan ( SainsPen ) , TESOL dan Pendidikan Khas.

  1. Adakah saya wajib menyertai aktiviti kokurikulum ?

Ya, SEMUA pelajar PPIP diwajibkan untuk menyertai akitiviti kokurikulum badan beruniform selama 3 tahun dan penyertaan dalam aktiviti kokurikulum akan dikira dalam markah unit. Pilihan aktiviti kokurikulum badan beruniform ialah PALAPES, SUKSIS, SJAM, PBSM, Kelanasiswa dan SISPA.

  1. Apakah kursus yang ditawarkan untuk dijadikan kursus major dan minor?

School of Social Sciences FAQ

  1. What are Social Sciences?

Social Sciences is basically study of human behavior, basic about how the society operate.

  1. What are the majors in Social Sciences?

There have 4 major subjects of Social Sciences in USM which are Anthropology and Sociology, Economy, Development, Planning and Management  and Political Sciences.

  1. What are the compulsory subjects should first year student take?

The four core subjects ( Introduction to anthropology and sociology, Introduction to Economy Issues, Introduction to Development, Planning and Management and Introduction to Political Science) are the compulsory subjects should take by social science first year students. Stepping into Semester 2, students should choose their major and minor subjects.

  1. What minor subject can be chosen?

Minor subjects normally based on the school that provide minor subject, mainly have to check the timetable with other school to prevent clash timetable happen. Example of minor subjects : Archeology, Psychology and so on.

  1. What is the cumulative units for graduate in Social Science?

122 units

  1. How many years for the course of Social Science?

4 years.

  1. What is the medium of teaching in Social Science program?

Bilingual. You are allowed to use either BM and BI to answer the papers.

  1. Do student need to buy text books?

This depends on the lecturer, but most of the lecturer will provide the lecture notes.

  1. How to register courses for the first semester?

For the first semester, School of Social Sciences will automatically register the courses for all students. For the extra courses, for example ( language courses) have to manually go to School of Language and Translation to queue for registration.

  1. What is the proper attire to attend lectures and tutorials?

T-shirt, long pants and cover shoes will do. You will need to wear formally during your presentation.

  1. Are all students compulsory to join co-curricular activities?

USM does not force students to join co-curricular activity. For the course of Social Science, students no force to fulfill the units (credit hours) from co-curricular activities to graduate successfully but students are still allow to choose co-curricular to fulfill U code, (University code). However, USM have a lot of societies. These societies or club have no units but students able to earn their MYCSD point in order to secure a hostel room in second year. Anyway, joining society or not are based on own preference.


School of Languages, Literacies and Translation (SOLLAT) FAQ

  1. What will be studied by the students pursuing degree of English for Professionals (EfP) in School of Languages, Literacies and Translation (PPBLT)?

English for Professionals is a 3-year degree course and students will need to accumulate a total of 125 units in order to graduate which are inclusive of Core (T), Minor (M), University (U) and Elective (E) courses. The only major course in PPBLT is English for Professionals, however, students are allowed to minor in any of the courses as they wish from the schools below beginning from Year 2 Semester I, namely:

  • School of The Arts
  • School of Biology
  • School of Chemistry
  • School of Communication
  • School of Computer Sciences
  • School of Educational Studies
  • School of Housing, Building and Planning
  • School of Humanities
  • School of Industrial Technology
  • School of Management
  • School of Mathematical Sciences
  • School of Physics
  • School of Social Sciences

Other than that, students can even choose to minor in PPBLT itself by pursuing the following foreign language courses such as Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, German, Japanese, Korean, French, Thai and Tamil.

  1. Is it necessary/compulsory to buy textbooks?

Students do not have to buy textbooks for most of the courses available in English for Professionals (EfP). Lecturers will provide slides for your perusal. Nevertheless, for language courses like Malay and English languages, textbook would be a need when attending lectures.

  1. Do students have to go for internship programme?

Yes indeed. It is compulsory for students to go for internship programme at the end of Year 2 Semester II after finishing examinations in order to gain real life working experience.

  1. What is the proper attire for attending lectures or tutorial classes?

It is necessary for students to wear long pants and covered shoes when attending classes. The school does accept students wearing round-neck shirts as well. On the other hand, it is not necessary for students to wear formal attire except during presentation for tutorial class.

  1. How do students register for courses in the first semester?

Students will need to fill in the application form manually and register the courses during the official period of Online Course Registration (OCR) in school. Each student will be assigned an Academic Advisor (AA) to further clarify your doubts regarding the courses.

  1. Are the papers of English for Professionals (EfP) easy to be scored well?

Students can in fact score well by putting in time and effort as most of the papers are not hard to be understood and the lecturers will always try their utmost to help the students.

  1. Is it compulsory for students to take part in co-curricular activities?

Nope, the school does not make it compulsory for the students of PPBLT to join co-curricular activities even though in Year 1 Semester I it is stated that students will need to gain one unit by joining co-curricular activities. All in all, it is optional.

  1. How do students get accessed to Internet?

Students will get to connect to USM network within the compound of USM by using their own IDs which will be given during orientation week. Nonetheless, it is to be noted that the speed of connection is not guaranteed and will be diverse at different places in the school.

  1. What are the job prospects or career opportunities after graduating?

Students can involve themselves in a variety of careers by pursuing degree in English for Professionals (EfP), namely:

  • Broadcasting and Journalism
  • Multimedia
  • Banking
  • Consultancy
  • Editing and publishing
  • Tourism and hospitality

  1. Where is School of the Arts?
    Located just beside Restoran Nasi Kandar Subaidah and in front of Dewan Budaya (Cultural Hall), it is considered the most strategic location ever!
    *Blue location: Place where you will have your orientation.
    *Red location: It’s where School of the Arts located!

  2. Where is the main office for art school located?
    Adiwarna Gallery – The main door at the entrance of art school.
  3. Is art school big and nice?
    Comfortable for all of us.
  4. Are there any food stalls/cafes around School of the Arts?
    NASI KANDAR SUBAIDAH, just located right beside the school with friendly mamaks!
  5. Do we have vending machines in the school?
    3 machines.
  6. How can I get to school?
    Take bus C or AC and get ready to drop off when you see Subaidah.
  7. Is our school far away from hostels?
    RAPID USM kan ada.
  8. How about our dress code?
    Jeans, T-shirt, as long as it is decent. Presentations mostly formal.
  9. Can I wear slippers to art school/class?
    Depends but not recommended as you’ll need to wear covered shoes for heavyworks in studio.
  10. Any art shops in/around USM?
    You can get basic stationaries at COOP (same block as Subaidah). MIRACLE (just opposite Sg. Dua’s gate) & DURIEMAS (in front of McDonalds Sg Dua) are just nearby!
  11. Any other bigger art shop in Penang?
    NANYANG Art Materials located in Georgetown.
  12. Do we need to spend huge sum of money for art courses?
    Generally, YES.
  13. Any nearby ATMs?
    The nearest will be BSN, just opposite the school, behind Dewan Budaya.
  14. I’m taking Fine Art, but I don’t know how to draw portraits. How?
    Don’t worry, it’s not just about portraits.
  15. I’m taking Graphic/Product Design/New Media, but I don’t know how to use the softwares.
    No worries! That is why you are here.
  16. Are all the studios open for 24 hours?
  17. Can we go to school at night?
    YES, it is open 24 hours for you, but do be aware of your belongings.
  18. Can I go to school during weekends when there is no class?
    Everyday. Anytime.
  19. Do we need to bring any art materials like watercolor, drawing blocks etc?
    Bring whatever art materials you have, you will need it.
  20. I don’t know what art materials I should prepare.
    Don’t worry! Your lecturer will tell you everything you need.
  21. What brand of laptops should I buy?
    Affordable, you may refer to each course’s requirements.
  22. Can we bring laptop during lecture?
    But don’t use if there’s no need for it.
  23. Are computer labs available at School of the Arts?
  24. I’m taking Music, do I need to bring my own musical instruments?
    At your own will if you would like to major in other instruments other than piano.
  25. Does School of the Arts provide practice room for music students? What is the time for practices?
  26. What will I learn first in Music Department?
    Usually first year students will need to attend keyboard class for 2 semesters.

    Yes, it is called Panggung Pelenggang Cahaya.

  43. Are the lecturers aggressive?
    They are kind enough. You’ll be friends with them in no time!

    But YES, with reasonable reason.

  46. Will I have chance to be in the same class with the students from other art courses?
    Mostly in your 1st year.
  47. Why can I see seniors attending the same class with us (juniors)?
    Because they are taking minor/elective subjects etc.

    No assignments are without due dates. Depends, but YES, normally.
  50. Is it true that 60% coursework and 40% exam for art courses?
    Some subjects are 100% coursework, some are 100% theory.
  51. Is it hard to score for art courses?
    No pain, no gain.
  52. Can I take minors from other departments/schools?

    RINTIS stands for ‘Research and Innovation Towards Integration and Sustainability’. It is an annual exhibition hosted by the school to showcase final year students’ artwork.
  61. What is FYP?
    FinalYear Project for final year student.
  62. I am not a music students, can I use their practice room?
    Sure. But we need to give the priority for music students.
  63. Which language will be using for Music Theory and other music courses?
  64. I am a performing in arts student, is that I have any chance to perform on stage?Sure. That’s why you come here.
  65. Is that any music technology course provided for art students
    Sure. You can take Music Technology as a minor subject.
  66. Can I know more information about Acting and Directing courses?
    Performing art, also known as drama and theatre, we learnt about how to act and direct an theatre and some basic stage knowledge such as lighting, sound, stage business, how to analyse script, writing plot, constume and so on.
  67. Is it practical more than theory for Acting and Directing course?
    Actually we need to learn for theory and assignment also. Once we need to do for a production, we need to spend time to do a practice and prepare for our show well. Otherwise, practical are important for us too. In first year, we will learn fundamentals of acting and directing, bangsawan and so on.
  68. Is that study for Acting and Directing can get job after graduate?
    Of course. You can get job in performing art as career or become the member of a production team. You can be an actor, director, production manager, stage manager, event manager, lighting designer, costume designer and so on!
  69. I am a full time Music Student. Can I be a part time music teacher at outside USM?
    Sure you can. It depends on your time management.

School of Biological Sciences FAQ

  1. Where is the school situated?

The school of Biological Sciences is located in between the lecture halls’ complex STUVW and the School of Chemical Sciences. If you are coming from the grand hall Dewan Tuanku Syed Putra (We call it DTSP), you can reach the school from the second library along the pathway by your left, before you reach the Dewan Kuliah foyer. Key item to remind you to turn to the pathway, the vendor machines and atm machines! It is generally situated in the center of the university’s compound, we can easily reach to other facilities and places!

  1. Can our buses reach the school?

There is no bus stand outside the school, but there is a bus stand at our Chemical Store and another bus will stop at lecture halls’ complex STUVW. Our school situated just walking distance from the two spots. Laboratory? No worries, there is another bus stand nearby it and the school of Housing, Building and Planning.

  1. Breakfast? Lunch hour? Where to go to have meal nearby the school? Any nice food nearby?

Live a healthy lifestyle, we advise you to take meals on time. There are a few cafeteria nearby, for instance the Bakti Permai hostel’s cafeteria, Pi’qapen nearby Lecture Hall U, Fajar Harapan hostel’s cafeteria, Kafe Siswa (or we called it the Bird Nest), wide variety of food…. And DESSERTS! *ps: different cafe have different ‘famous’ cousine, so do go explore and leave your comment!

  1. Job prospect? What can i do with my degree?

Besides lecturer, actually there are a lot more job opportunities related to our studies, could be in the laboratories as researcher, in the field such as agricultural pest supervisor, consultant, or in medical field as medical assistant, or work with the government as project consultant, forestry officer, department of Environment officer, or in tourism field as tourism officer or tour guide. There are a few USM graduates now working in World Wildlife Fund too! There are a lot more job opportunities for us to be exposed, be open and do some research!

  1. Can I use my biology degree to reenter University after I graduate for another course?

That’s for sure. The degree is recognised in local public and private institutions, as well as institutions overseas.

  1. What is the difference between pure bio students and applied bio students?

The difference between the pure and applied bio courses is that pure courses is more towards theory while applied science is more to application of the theory. For instance, Botany and Agrobiology. Both courses study plants, but Agrobiology is study on crops, while Botany course focuses physiology, morphology, anatomy and taxonomy in theoretical view. Pure sciences requires in-depth study, thus students tend to further studies, while applied sciences more on practical part, hence more job opportunities for the graduates. Pure bio during third year of study will have their major in either Botany, Zoology or Microbiology, while applied bio students will choose among Biotechnology, Agrobiology, Aquatic Biology, Environmental Biology, and Vector and Parasites.

  1. Can I do credit transfer to another university to study later on ?

Yes. However, we need to check with our school’s officers and academic advisor as different terms are used in the course naming. Hence, some credit transfer can be made if the scope and topic is the same and agreed by the dean.

  1. Is there a Twinning programme ?

Yes there is. You have to go to the International Office to ask for the proper procedures, then get the permission from the dean. Do some research, as some foreign universities require some basics in foreign language and check is that possible to do credit transfer. If credit transfer is allowed then you can proceed, or extend for another semester to graduate, and please do check with the scholarship contract if there’s any to avoid contract being breached.

  1. What is the minimum point to get 1st class? What if I get 1st class honoured?

In order to get honoured as first class degree holder, you have to maintain your cumulative grade point average, or CGPA at or above 3.67 over 4.00 by graduation. Well, being honoured first class you can fully waive your ptptn loan and might get higher chances to be employed and better salary (of course, your extra-curricular activities’ involvement and your performance play important role too!) .

  1. When can we start to take our minor papers?

For certain minor courses such as Management, we can take starting first semester. Some papers only taught in either semester one or two of the academic year, so please be cautious!

  1. What are T,E,M, and U papers?

They stands for the basic or core courses “Teras”, “Elective” courses, “Minor” courses, and “University” courses. It can be found in the programme guidebook, so no worries as you will be briefed on the distinct courses during the orientation week or the Program Siswa Lestari USM.

  1. What is unit? What to do with it?

Units, is just another term as credit hours in other institutions. You need to accumulate certain amount of units in order to graduate.

  1. By taking biology course, can I be a doctor?

Absolutely no. You should take Medical or Health Sciences instead of Biological Sciences. However, by majoring in Microbiology you can still be vaccine researcher or medical assistants that works in the hospital.

  1. Where to get the reference books? Campbell? Pearson Longman?

During first few lectures, your lecturer will show you the reference books to be used for the semester. By that time, you can go to the bookshop in the school, which we call “ko-op”. Most of the books are available there as lecturers will order for you. There is another bookstore at Sungai Dua shoplots, Pustaka Union. Campbell and Pearson can be your reference, wide range reading enhances understanding and helps in memorising the concepts!

  1. What minor courses we can take?

In the programme guidebook that will be given during the orientation week, there is a list of papers you can take and minor courses that fits well with our school’s timetable for our core courses. Hence, you can take any minor programme as long as the lectures’ time does not clash. You can get the timetable for the minor course papers and the packages from the office of the school that offers the course.

  1. Do we need to bring original certificates? Need to be certified?

If you’re applying ptptn, you don’t need to bring the original copy of certificates. Photostated copies will do, and can be certified by USM officers. If you plan to apply for scholarships, you will have to bring along your original copies.

  1. What is BIOSOC?

BioSociety. A school’s society that have activities and bio-related events. Aimed to bring exposure and experience to bio school students.

  1. Do we need to take co-curricular activities? What are the options we have?

We have to accumulate at least 6 units for Co-curricular activities to graduate, however we can replace it with language as option course, or skills courses.

  1. Is that easy for us to buy stuffs? Or we need to buy them beforehand?

There are market and shops nearby and at a few hostels’ cafeteria. Just bring the essential stuffs you think you’ll need.

  1. Is there any scholarship offered to us?

Yes there is. You have to check out and do some researches online to look for scholarships that you’re eligible. Sometimes posters might be pasted on school’s notice boards

  1. What is a fieldtrip?

A paper compulsory for bio students. We will go to our school’s Center for Marine and Coastal Studies (CEMACS) to have our fieldtrip to study on 4 different habitat and the ecosystems. It is really fun! And it provides you an opportunity to really know which field you’re really into and interested.

  1. Academic advisor? Who are they and what are they for?

Academic advisor is lecturer that will be your mentor throughout your study life in USM. If you having doubt in course and major choosing, you can always seek advice from them! They are nice, to the ground and very willing to share their experiences.

  1. Lectures will be conducted in which language?

In English for most of the courses, except in few university courses such as Bahasa Melaysia, Tamadun Islam dan Tamadun Asia (TITAS), Hubungan Etnik and so on.

  1. Biology papers easy to score?

It depends. Investment of time and effort is crucial in order to get good result and deepen understanding.

School of Communication FAQ

Where is School of Commnication?

The school of Communication is located at the building behind the CIMB bank inside of USM. This is where the administrative office and the lecturers’ offices are located. There is another building called the C10, Balai Media. It is located next to the Dewan Kuliah Sains Kemasyarakatan and opposite of the Pusat Pengajian Ilmu Kemanusiaan. Balai Media is where the Communication students have their tutorial class and the place where the students majoring in Journalism do their job.

How to reach the School of Communication?

You may be seeking for bus AC, bus D, bus B, and bus C to reach the school of communication. There’s definitely a distance if we choose to walk from our hostel. In fact, the only hostel you can do so is hostel of Cahaya Gemilang.

When do you need to choose your MAJOR?

Basically we need to think of or start selecting our major during second semester of first year. The confirmation of your major usually will be released during semester break. Accordingly, your second year university life will begin based on  your major choosing.

What is the bachelor degree course offered by School of Communication? What are the major available in USM?

The degree offered in the School of Communication is the Bachelor of Communication. It is a 4 years degree courses where students are allowed to choose among 3 major that are offered by the school.

The 3 major are listed as below:

1. Film and Broadcasting

A combination of critical and analytical understanding of screen studies and professional training in audio, video and film production. Students specialising in Film & Broadcasting will be able to produce quality media products as well as thought-provoking screen products that critically address various pressing issues in society.

2. Journalism

An area of specialisation offered under this programme. Students will possess critical understanding and knowledge on various issues pertaining to the sociological aspects of journalism as well as useful skills in writing, reporting, photojournalism and desktop publishing.

3. Persuasive Communication

Persuasive Communication integrates several academic fields related to persuasion and influence, namely advertising, public relations, public communication campaign and event management. Students specializing in Persuasive Communication will be able to understand various intellectual paradigms, theories and knowledge, which they will then be able to apply to various practical-oriented courses.

What are elective and minor subjects? Which should I choose?

Elective subjects are related to your major. They are considered deeper and concentrated study of a particular division of your major.  However, students can try to take the elective subjects which are not in the field of the major too. This helps the students to learn more than just their major.

Minor subjects may not be related to your major. The subjects are for you to widen and explore second area of interest other than your major. Usually, each school in USM will offer a package of subjects for their minor students. (Example: Basic Psychology are minor subjects offered by School of Social Science.)

Let’s give extra information, the hottest minor that chosen by us were management or psychology. Most importantly, choice still goes to you.

Is it hard to score “A” or pass for Communication students? Any tips to do well in exam?

Different subjects, different lecturers, different standards. As mentioned above, work hard and work smart. Try not to study during last minute. If you fail to catch up the syllabus during the starting point, then the following parts will be challenging for you. Understand instead of memorizing the facts and theories. Search and try to look for more readings related to the study. For tutorial or assignment, there are mostly group assignments in the course, so work hard and play well in the group to score well. Do not be the parasite of the group.

Do we have to do internship as Communication students?

Are the lecturers of School of Communication nice?

The lecturers and professors are hired to teach us, not to scold or punish us. If you complete their task and pay attention to their lecture, there is no reason that they will treat you badly. Just remember to respect them, and also be punctual to their classes.

When can we know our timetable in School of Communication?

During Dean’s and Programme Chairman’s briefing, each of the first year students will get a copy of timetable of the new academic session. It may look a bit messy because all subjects of different major are on one piece of paper. So, you can highlight the subjects on first semester or using Microsoft Excel to make your own timetable.

Are we compulsory to buy any textbooks in School of Communication?

The lecturers usually do not force you to buy any book. Instead, they only recommend you which book to refer, or list you the books which they use to make lecture notes during the first lecture. The courses require more on reading article, journals and writing of the scholars.

Do we have to bring laptop all the time?

No need. Laptop is probably required only when you are doing presentation.

Can we register extra subjects for first semester?

Yes, but please make sure the classes do not crash. Usually during orientation week, the language course and KO-K briefing and registration is only conducted after you get your timetable, which means you should prioritize the classes your must-take subjects of the first semester before registering extra subjects.

1. Is Chemistry a major part in Chemical Engineering?

Don’t be deceived by the course name. Chemical Engineering is about Maths and Physics, plus some organic chemistry knowledge. Mass Balance and Energy Balance are some of the important subjects for this course.

2. Will there be a lot of assignments?

Not so many if compared with other engineering schools.

3. Any good lecturers?

Yes, but not many. Only a few with “Professor” title give good lectures. Most lecturers are knowledgeable but somehow have difficulties passing down their knowledge.

4. What activities or events are offered?

Join NACES. The most prestigious event, national level competition for chemical engineers to-be. Includes debate, powerpoint presentation, plant design ect. .

5. How far is the school from the hostel?

Don’t worry, Engineering Campus is small enough. 10 minute walk from hostel to school.

6. Is the course difficult?

If you have a strong basic in Maths and Physics, you’ll be alright.

7. Do students need to buy textbooks?

Well, seniors are friendly and helpful. They will just give you their notes, lecture notes, test papers, assignments, ect. Cheers.

8. What is the proper attire for attending lectures and tutorial classes?

Jeans and collar T-shirt will do. Formal wear for presentations and vivas.

9. Can students drive in the campus?

First year students are not allowed to bring their own cars to the campus. Bikes and motorcycles are allowed but you’ll have to register at the Jabatan Keselamatan.

10. What specific things should I bring for this course?

First years will learn engineering drawing, so you might wanna bring your compasses and protractor.

11. What about the time table?

Don’t expect university life for this course to be free, class starts at 8am to 4pm and sometimes 5pm. Be mentally prepared or you might just sleep in class.

12. Are there food near the school?

Yes, Staff Café is just few steps away from the school.

13. Do we have the chance to meet students from other schools?

Yes, some lectures are combined with student from other schools like calculus and material lectures.

14. Is joining co-curricular activity a must?

No. But joining co-curricular activities gives you MyCSD which secures you a place in hostel if the marks are high enough.

15. Do we need to bring laptop and printer?

Yes, especially when you want to do your assignment. Sometimes there are online assignments in e-learning. Printing service is provided at Café Jaya just in front of the Jaya hostel and also at the post office located at Staff Café. But you can still bring it for your own convenience.

School of Industrial Technology (TI) FAQ

Where is TI? How to get there?

TI School is building G07. It is surrounded by Desasiswa Bakti Permai, School of Physics and DK carpark. If you are taking bus, you can stop at basketball courts of Bakti Permai and walk across the road to reach TI.

What are the bachelor degree courses offered by TI? What do I study in my course?

(a) Bachelor of Technology (Hons) (Food Technology): Students focus on “farm to table” i.e. the processing, preserving, and packaging of foods before they reach the consumer market. (4 years programme)

(b) Bachelor of Technology (Hons) (Bioresource, Paper & Coatings): Commonly known as BPC. Students study on the knowledge of bioresource (Example: wood), paper manufacturing, coating technology (Example: paint, ink) and also furniture manufacturing. (3½ years programme)

(c) Bachelor of Technology (Hons) (Environmental Technology): Students focus on waste and pollution management of industries. Physics and mathematics calculations are often involved in most subjects. (3½ years programme)

(d) Bachelor of Technology (Hons) (Bioprocess Technology): Similar with biotechnology, students learn to manufacture industrial products by transforming living matter, using nutrient and enzyme technology. (4 years programme)

What are elective and minor subjects? Which should I choose?

Elective subjects are related to your major. They are considered deeper and concentrated study of a particular division of your major.  (Example: Post-harvesting Technology and Management of Halal Food are elective subjects for Food Technology course).

Minor subjects may not be related to your major. The subjects are for you to widen and explore second area of interest other than your major. Usually, each school in USM will offer a package of subjects for their minor students. (Example: Introduction to Management and Marketing are minor subjects offered by School of Management)

Further information can be obtained from TI Buku Panduan given during orientation week. However, you only choose whether taking elective or minor after the first semester.

What if I am going to study the course that I have no foundation? (Example: You are studying Environmental Technology, but you are not a Physics student before)

No one is born smart. The only advice is to work as hard as you can. Get friends and seniors’ help. You are not the only one who encounters this. Some seniors are like you before. However they are still able to score and graduate. All this depends on your attitude and effort.

Is it hard to score “A” or pass for TI students? Any tips to do well in exam?

Different subjects, different lecturers, different standards. As mentioned above, work hard and work smart. Try not to only study at last minute. If you fail to catch up the syllabus on the front part, then the following parts will be challenging for you. Understand instead of memorizing the facts. Search and try to do past year questions. For tutorial or assignment, try to do it on your own instead of copying, it will help you a lot.

Are we compulsory to join all Persatuan Teknologi Industri (PTI) activities and buy the T-shirt?

All first year TI students are compulsory to join Interaction Day of PTI, the remaining activities are not. For T-shirt, usually first year and second year students have to buy.

1) Where is the location of School of Mathematical Sciences?

The School of Mathematical Sciences is the nearest school to the Sungai Dua gate. (Outside this gate, you have various food restaurants and bus stop) Basically, it is very convenient to locate the School of Mathematical Sciences.

From ground floor to second floor is the School of Mathematical Sciences (The ones painted in grey) whereas from the third floor to seventh floor is the School of Computer Sciences. The main office is located at the ground floor.


2) Difference between Pure Mathematics and Applied Mathematics?

In Pure Mathematics, we are interested in theoretical mathematics. Pure Mathematics studies the theories and proofs of the existence of these theories that builds up the field of Mathematics.

In Applied Mathematics, we will also study theoretical mathematics but not so much in depth into it as the title suggests, we are more inclined towards the application of the theories. We apply these mathematical theories into solving real-world problems.


3) What are the courses offered from the School of Mathematical Science?

The School of Mathematical Sciences offers 5 courses, namely:

(i)         Pure Mathematics

In Pure Mathematics, we are interested in theoretical mathematics. Pure Mathematics studies the theories and proofs of the existence of these theories. You will be studying programming such as C++, MATLAB, and etc.
(ii)        Applied Statistics

Applied Statistics focuses on statistics stuffs like data and decision making. Remember your hypothesis testing? It is a lot on that too. Undergraduates will also be looking at the theory of probability, decision making, prediction as well as a lot on analysis. You will also study programming such as C++, MATLAB and so on.
(iii)       Operational Research

Operational research (OR) encompasses a wide range of problem-solving techniques and methods applied in the pursuit of improved decision-making and efficiency, such as simulation, mathematical optimization, queueing theory and other stochastic-process models and many more. Operational researchers faced with a new problem must determine which of these techniques are most appropriate given the nature of the system, the goals for improvement, and constraints on time and computing power.

(iv)       Mathematical Modelling

Mathematical modelling is the process of using various mathematical structures – graphs, equations, diagrams, scatterplots, tree diagrams, and so forth – to represent real world situations. Meaning, undergraduates in this course will use mathematical structures to transform problems into mathematical representation and solve it, therefore trying to solve the problems that occur.

(v)       Mathematics and Economics

This course offers you two major namely Mathematics and Economics. These 2 courses are interrelated with each other as the things you learn in Mathematics can be applied into Economics and vice versa. This course is almost like Actuarial Science, just that it is not as in depth as Actuarial Science. You will be studying about Mathematics as well as Economics.

Most of the seniors of the School of Mathematical Science are friendly and helpful. They are more than willing to assist should there be any doubts. Some of the lecturers are nice and they are willing to go the extra mile for his/her students.


13) What minor can we take?

In School of Mathematical Sciences, you can choose to take a minor in any of the schools in USM. Mostly, undergraduates of School of Mathematical Sciences will minor in Management, Psychology, Computer Science, Economics or Islamic Studies. This applies to all courses under the School of Mathematical Sciences except for Mathematics and Economics as this is a Double Major course, so undergraduates for this course are not allowed to take minor.


14) When can we take minor?

Usually, you can start taking your minor subjects during your second semester in your first year. (With exclusion to the undergraduates of Mathematics & Economics)

Undergraduates are not allowed to wear shorts, slippers, short skirt, singlet, and any other dress codes that are deemed inappropriate to attend classes.

19) What is Mathematics Society? Are undergraduates compulsory to join?

Mathematics Society is a society under the School of Mathematical Sciences. All undergraduates in the School of Mathematical Sciences are automatically members of Mathematics Society. Undergraduates are not made compulsory to join the activities of Mathematics Society, but are strongly encouraged to participate as participants or organizing committee of these activities.


20) Is Mathematics all about calculation?

If you think a student of the School of Mathematical Sciences is all about calculations, then you are wrong! Mathematics is, in fact, not calculation. It is a language of communication. You will realise that you will need to start reading Mathematics reference books or notes provided by your lecturer and understanding the theories in order to sit for your exams. The myth of mathematics is just about calculation is long gone once you are a student of the School of Mathematical Sciences.

Right now, you are about to embark on a brand new chapter of your life. If you are having any doubts or confusions, here’s the FAQs that hopefully will be of help to all of you.

1. What will students study in a Management degree?

Management is a 4-year degree course and in order to graduate successfully, students will have to accumulate 136 units (credit hours) including 21 units of several papers required by the university (English, Bahasa Malaysia, TITAS, Ethnic Relation etc). Management students are required to choose a major and minor from the lists below.

Students will only be asked to choose minor during 3rd semester and major during your 4th semester.

So, for first year, students will normally take subjects about the basics or some fundamental of those major courses. Students will take papers such as Principle of Marketing, Finance, Organizational Behaviour, Operational Management and International Business. All the papers mentioned above will unveil what can expect from those majors.

2. What is the best major or minor?

There is no such thing as the best major or minor. It all depends on what students like and enjoy the most. So, when the time comes, choose something that you are interested in.

3. What will students study in an Accounting degree?
Similar to the Management program, Accounting is a 4-year degree course and in order to graduate, you will have to accumulate 137 units (credit hours) including 15 units of several papers required by the university (English, Bahasa Malaysia, TITAS, Ethnic Relation, Core Entrepreneurship etc). Students will get more details about this inside a guide book that will distribute during orientation. Accounting program is a professional course so students are not required to have no minor subjects.

4. For accounting students, what qualification we may get after graduate?

The Bachelor of Accounting degree graduates are recognized by the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA). Graduates will be obtained a certificate in Bachelor of Accounting (Hons.) and accepted as Certified Accountants after gaining 3 years of working experiences at an accounting firm or an industry.

6. What is the medium of teaching in management and accounting program?

English. Lectures, tutorials and examinations are all conducted in English. However, for Minor courses, it may be in English, BM or other languages.

7. How to register the courses for the first semester?

For the first semester, School of Management provided automatic courses registration. Students are only required to check the courses that auto-registered.

8. Do students have to do internship?

For management program, the students will do their internship during the 8th semester which is the last semester. For accounting program, the students will do their internship during the 6th semester.

9. Do students need to buy textbooks?

Textbooks will be recommended by lecturers. We do not encourage photocopying of textbooks but students may make their own decision.  For some papers, lecturers will require students to take online quizzes which carry weight into coursework grades (eg. 5% or 10% of coursework grades). In order to take those online quizzes, students will need to have an activation code that comes along with the purchase of textbooks. So in this case, students will have no choice but to buy the textbooks.

Lecturers will be using slides to teach most of the time, and USUALLY, students will be given the lecture notes (PPT slides or PDF). Anyway, for those courses don’t have the online quizzes, juniors can try to get the textbooks from seniors for free or buy the textbooks from seniors.

10. What is the proper attire for attending lectures and tutorial classes?

In discussing this issue, USM is comparatively liberal among public universities. Students do not have to wear formal to attend classes every day. As long as they wear long pants and covered shoes.  Round neck t-shirts are also acceptable in USM.

11. How do students get access to Internet?

Within USM compound, students can connect to USM network using their own IDs which will be given upon entering USM. However, being able to connect does not guarantee the speed of the connection.

12. Can students choose not to attend lectures or tutorials?

Students are required to have at least 70% and above attendance or else they may be barred from final examinations. So, students are not endorsed to skip lectures and tutorials. Moreover, lecturers might give tips for examinations during certain lectures or tutorials. Some lecturers may choose to give pop quizzes to ensure students attend their classes.

13. Must all students join any co-curricular activities?

USM does not force students to join co-curricular activities. However, students might need the units (credit hours) from co-curricular activities to graduate successfully. So, to join or not is up to students own preferences. 1st year students will be given more information during orientation week.

USM also have a lot of societies or clubs which they can choose to join. These societies or clubs offer NO units. However, by joining those societies or clubs, students will be able to gain MyCSD points (important to secure a hostel room in second year). MyCSD is My Continuous Student Development in full. It is a program that intends to build a holistic student personality under the APEX program. Having a low MyCSD points will lessen the chance of getting a room in subsequent year in USM. Again, joining these societies or clubs is based on students own preference.

 14. Can students drive in USM? How to get the sticker?

First year students are NOT allowed to bring in any vehicles into USM. If students get caught driving any unregistered vehicle in USM, they will receive a summon. Students can only bring their own vehicle to USM start from second year. Still, students have to get a sticker and register their own vehicle with Jabatan Keselamatan in USM. In order to entitle a sticker, students have to be active in societies and clubs. Stickers are limited and they are only given to students who are actively participating in the clubs. Anyway, vehicles without stickers can be parked at Padang Kawad ONLY.

15. Can students take foreign language? Is it compulsory to take it?

Yes, management and accounting students are allowed take foreign language. It is not compulsory but you can take foreign language to fulfill the units (credit hours) in order to graduate successfully.
